Review: Frank Skinner On Demand With..., BBC iPlayer

Frank Skinner

I wasn’t sure whether to review this series. Judging by the first episode Frank Skinner’s latest BBC online show is basically 20 minutes-worth of plugs for other BBC online shows with a few gags lobbed in. Each week Skinner is joined by a special guest from the comedy world and they conduct their chin-wag in a place where the guest watches online programmes.

First up is Lee Mack who watches in bed because he is either on tour and lonely or his kids have colonised the living room TV. So Mack and Skinner settle onto a bed – stop sniggering at the back – and shoot the breeze.

Given that these are two of the most naturally funny performers in the UK one would expect more laughs, but this feels more like a genuine relaxed chat rather than comics trying to out-gag each other as they sometimes do on, say, Alan Davies As Yet Untitled. The result is more about gentle chuckles than having to change your underwear because you have laughed so hard you have wet yourself.

Mack’s favourite programmes range from the scary horror compilation Fear Itself to an old 1980s Comic Roots documentary featuring Kenneth Williams holding court in a pub. Mack recalls growing up in pubs like this and the programme clearly touched a nostalgic nerve. But I didn’t know it was on iPlayer and I love Kenneth Williams. Did he stumble on it or was he pushed in the direction by the makers of On Demand With?

Elsewhere the former stable boy selects Officially Amazing, which looks like an update of Roy Castle’s Record Breakers. Mack is due to appear on it himself though presumably not doing multiple loop-the-loops on jet-propelled water skis as was shown in this clip. And finally there is a clip from the new animated version of Peter Rabbit. Which seems appropriate. What with Matt Berry Does… and various comedy pilots online programmes seem to be multiplying like rabbits at the moment. And this one does rather peter out.
