6. What do your children think of your job?
It’s all they’ve ever known. I think they're secretly proud. I know they miss me when I’m away, which is often. That said, I’m home a lot at breakfast time and I make great breakfasts for them. Think Joe Pesci in Casino.
7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
The constant need for self-appraisal. The navel gazing, the self-importance, the desire to be liked. It’s not healthy. It’s hard not to fall into the trap. There’s a perpetual balancing act between self-awareness and grandiose pomposity about your own self worth.
8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
Ha – see above. I think I’m good. If I’m honest, I’m potentially really good – let’s see. I’m ready to give the next 12 months a massive go.
9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
More than I did before I did this job, less than I thought I would. I’m not complaining though.
10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
Yes, I was incredibly lucky early on to get the part of Young Kenny in Phoenix Nights. It gave me a big dollop of confidence and helped get me though doors of comedy clubs I’d probably have to have been knocking on for years. Thing is with getting a break, you have to take it and do something with it.
11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?
I hate golf. I reckon I’m probably more tortured artist….though I’m not sure it’s that clear. I do get on with it (life) but I also self analyse too much.
12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
I miss the bravado, the wit, the boundless enthusiasm, the ridiculousness and the arrogance of Anthony H Wilson.
13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not?
I do, they slip occasionally, but I’ve just done them. Enormously satisfying.
