6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?
My mum is proud of me now. She definitely got prouder when I moved out and stopped making her lend me money to do Edinburgh shows.
7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
Having to constantly buy A1 sheets of white card to become a Sanitary Bag Lady is annoying. But nothing is actually that bad, I've had far worse jobs than this. (Christmas elf, security guard, an office where they ate toast compulsively and no one spoke to each other).
8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
I think that I am doing the best I can considering the circumstances.
9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
I earn enough that I stopped temping - I would like to earn enough that I never have to temp again.
10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
Yes - I've definitely had lucky moments. My first Edinburgh show being on PBH's Free Fringe, in a great venue, just as people started to take that side of Edinburgh seriously, was definitely a mixture of luck and good timing. I don't think you can rely on them though, there's a nice quote in The Artist's Way which says "pray to catch the bus, then run as fast as you can." You just have to keep working and grab those moments when they come along.
11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?
I have the capacity for both I think. But I am genuinely more productive, creative and happy since becoming a comedian. I wasn't very pleasant when I was tortured and doing nothing with it.
12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
David Bowie holds a special place in my heart. During the 53 hour improv show, a Canadian improviser played David Bowie (Labyrinth years) in the show. I was so tired I thought it was really him. We were playing a couple in the show and I became convinced it was real. I thought I had destroyed his marriage and was worried about what Iman would do now. Since then I've slept, but David has become my spirit guide. He's so talented and so creative and so beautiful. He's an angel that walks among us. So I guess you could say he's my favourite person or my God. Either one.
13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not?
Yes, I like to know where everything is. There is enough chaos in this life, the least you can do is know where your special big bras are.
