The Edinburgh Fringe's C venues has announced a new flagship venue. It will be the Edinburgh landmark, Saint Stephen’s in Stockbridge.
The A-listed building, which dates back to the 1820s, has occupied a special place on the Fringe for over 27 years and has been operated by leading arts organisations such at the Traverse, Aurora Nova and Northern Stage. C venues continues this tradition and is bringing an ambitious programme to the historic building. The full programme has not been announced yet and performers can still apply (see below). C venues traditionally focuses more on theatre than stand-up comedy, though the new venue will feature everything from cabaret to large-scale musicals, circus and physical theatre.
The venue will have a 450 capacity main theatre. While it is certainly a bold move, the main artistic action in recent years has gravitated towards the Old Town around Bristo Square where The Pleasance, Assembly, Gilded Balloon and Underbelly are all within a stone's throw of each other. Stockbridge is in the New Town, so it may be a challenge attracting audiences over to their side of the city.
Participants wishing to apply to appear in this iconic venue can find further details and an application form at www.cvenues.com
