Following last week's viral anti-Brexit monologue on his HBO show Last Week Tonight, John Oliver has responded this week with a shorter but equally angry rant about the result.

In the passionate piece which opened the latest edition of his weekly show, Oliver, who supported the Remain campaign and debunked a lot of the Leave arguments on his show last week, described Boris Johnson as 'a shaved orangutan with Owen Wilson's hair' and Nigel Farage a "three-time cover model for Punchable Face magazine."

He couldn't even celebrate the resignation of David Cameron: "It's like catching an ice cream cone out of the air because a child has been hit by a car. I'll eat it, I'll eat it, but it's tainted somehow."

Oliver went on to point out that the description on June 23 as Independence Day was dripping with irony given the fact that England's capital doesn't do very well in the new sequel of film of the same name: "First, Britain was already independent. In fact, it's what many other countries celebrate their independence from," Oliver said. "Second, the sequel to the movie they are quoting actually opened this week and features the wholesale destruction of London - which is beginning to feel pretty fucking appropriate right now."
