6. What do your parents think of your job?
Embarrassingly, they’re really proud. And they both really fancy people like Liam Williams, Tom Rosenthal and Ellie White (both my mum and my dad go equally nuts for all three, and more) so they’re just happy I do a job whereby they can get close to their hot crushes.
7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
The never-ending pre-stage panic and heart palpitations; the moments when you let Twitter influence your emotions (grow up! wait, I can’t!); going through receipts for eye-patches to see what you need to claim on your self-assessment tax return.
8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
I passed my driving test second time, with 7 or 8 minors. I was 18 years old. The test was taken at the Guildford test centre. Make of that what you will.
9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
Outrageous question. Recently just enough to not do other jobs alongside, but not enough that I have got rid of any of the contacts that provide me with the day-job employment. Keira from Secretaries Direct is on speed-dial, baby. I’d like to earn enough that I could speak to more of the charity guys in colourful coats. These days I’m sadly always “on my way to a meeting”. Shit, that’s bad, isn’t it.
10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
I’d say for as many lucky breaks I’ve had, I’ve had the unlucky nothings, so it all evens out. I’m more into talking bullshit about star signs than thinking too much about luck.
11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?
Yeah, I think there’s a third category: the bungee jumpers. It’s always terrifying, it’s always intense but holy Hell that’s a massive thrill. The whiplash from that bloody bungee string is a bitch, though.
12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
I’m obsessing over Miranda July at the moment. She seems to make art from such a particular, oddly shaped yet deeply social angle. And the stuff she makes and writes is so funny, as a result. I think she’s wonderful - any art that makes you both laugh and cry is the stuff of deep life.
13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).
Not. I make my bed, whisper ‘well done’ to myself then slip out of the threshold and into the day.
