David Walliams has caused a kerfuffle by posting a photo of himself dressed as Kim Jong-un.
He was dressed as the North Korean leader to attend Jonathan Ross' annual Halloween party at his house in north London. He posted the photo of himself and the caption "Happy Halloween from Kim Jong-un." on the evening of the party.
The outfit was compared to some of the characters he played in Little Britain and Come Fly With Me. "The scariest part of this costume is how you find it acceptable to continue to dress up as other races for ‘comedy’,” tweeted @ANGUSRAZE."
“We’re surprised that the man who did comedy sketches in black face has done this,” tweeted @inanitysgirl. “It’s racist, everyone needs to stop being so defensive.”
Others did defend Walliams though. @warrenallsworth wrote:"I don't find David Walliams particularly funny. But anyone branding that fancy dress costume as racist needs to get a life. Pathetic"
Matt Lucas has recently said that he has had second thoights about some of the work he did in Little Britain. The comedian told the Big Issue: “If I could go back and do Little Britain again, I wouldn’t make those jokes about transvestites. I wouldn’t play black characters. Basically, I wouldn’t make that show now. It would upset people. We made a more cruel kind of comedy than I’d do now."
This is not the first time Walliams has faced criticism on social media this week. Before this incident the comedian and children's author was criticised for kissing a dolphin by people who argued that dolphins should not be kept in captivity.
