News: Sitcom Star Stephen Lewis Dies

Actor Stephen Lewis, best known for his role as garage inspector Cyril "Blakey" Blake in the ITV sitcom On the Buses, has died aged 88.

He reprised Blakey in the sitcom Don't Drink The Water in which his character retired to Spain with his sister played by Patricia Coombs.

On The Buses was hugely successful, starting in 1969 and running for 74 episodes. There were also three feature-length films. Lewis co-wrote a number of episodes.

More recently Lewis played Clem "Smiler" Hemmingway in Last of the Summer Wine. He also appeared in Oh Dr Beeching, One Foot In The Grave and The All-New Alexei Sayle Show.

According to his family, the actor died "quite peacefully" in a nursing home in Wanstead, east London.
