Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Paul Smith: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

My children don’t really think much about it. They’re still very young.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

I’d say the travel and the lonely hotel stays but as I’m resident 20 minutes away from my house I have to say nothing. It’s great.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I’m good too. I think I get away with a lot because I’m affable on stage. It allows me to be cheeky and say quite insulting things to people and get away with it.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Enough :)

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

I consider myself very lucky. To have gotten in at the ground floor of Hot Water Comedy and been able to grow with it. I was quite disillusioned with comedy when I met Paul and Binty (the lads who run Hot Water) and they gave me a platform that allowed me to grow the way I have.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I’m a golfer I think. I’m quite happy with my situation.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

No idea.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

No. I’m a very messy person. I think as long as it’s your own mess you still know where everything is so tidying is just inefficient.
