Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Suzi Ruffell: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents think of your job?

They think it's great, which is lucky because they feature heavily in my sets.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

The driving, I have spent so much time on motorways in the last eight years. I have an encyclopedic knowledge of service stations.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

Well, this makes me feel uncomfortable but I guess that's why you are asking it. I think I am good and every gig I try and hope to be a bit better. I am constantly changing and altering my set so it is as good as it can be (dying inside imagining other comedians reading that). I really enjoy performing and I think that shows. I am especially proud of the show I am currently touring and I’m excited to write a new show for Edinburgh.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Enough to pay my rent and have Nandos whenever I like, not enough to own a house.

I would like to earn enough to not have to worry about money.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

I think there's an element of luck but it's mainly about hard work. Yes I have had a few lucky breaks, one that stands out, I was doing studio warm-up for a sitcom last year, one a week for 8 weeks, a producer saw me and ended up suggesting me for a TV spot.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I have no idea... a golfer that occasionally wakes themselves up with anxiety?

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

I think my favourite person would be my Nan but she was related to me. Someone I don't know, Ellen, no she falls into comedian. I know I should say someone who is trying to save the world but I am also really grateful to Dr Marten for making my favourite boots.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

I am super tidy, I have to have a really tidy and clean flat before I start my writing for the day, I do however have one messy drawer that I throw misc crap in, I think everyone is allowed one.
