Gavin & Stacey star Ruth Jones, Adam Kay, Robin Ince, Francesca Martinez, Nick Revell and Simon Day are among the names appearing at the forthcoming Laugharne Weekend. The unique event takes place from April 7 - 9.
The annual celebration of the arts takes place in Laugharne – pronounced "Larne" – in South Wales. The town was famously the home of writer Dylan Thomas. The festival is deliberately small-scale. The size of the town - which itself is very small - ensures that the festival will not grow beyond certain bounds. Its location means that festival visitors and townspeople rub shoulders with the artists and performers.
All events take place in Laugharne's clubs, churches and halls, tiny and intimate venues which entail the close proximity of audience and performers. The principal venues used are the Millennium Hall, the Congregational Church and the Rugby Club
Further events include renowned comedy writer David Quantick hosting his own special pub quiz and Keith Allen compering the annual anarchic late night Laugharne's Got Talent.
Also appearing in the eclectic line-up are folk legend Peggy Seeger, cricketer-turned-writer Mike Brearley, Squeeze stalwart Chris Difford, Jess Phillips MP, Jah Wobble, David Soul and Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita.
Laugharne was made a township in a 13th century charter ratified by King Edward The First. The town has had a long association with the arts boasting strong connections with Mary Wollstonecraft, J.M.W Turner, Kingsley Amis, Margaret Atwood and Richard Hughes.
The last word though should go to the town’s most famous resident Dylan Thomas who based his masterpiece ‘Under Milk Wood’ on the town and called Laugharne ‘the strangest town in Wales if not the world’.
