I agree with them.7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
The long late night drives on your own. To be honest the rest of it is pretty damn great.
8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
I think I am good at making new things. Trying. I think sometimes I’m brave. I am curious.
The Edinburgh festival has allowed me to grow more than I ever imagined I would into a better performer and writer than I was.I delight in what I do. I think I’m reasonably clever & that helps me write and think.9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
That changes hugely every year. I did a big advert last year and that meant I made more money that I ever have before.
I earn more than enough and as you can see I am not comfortable discussing exactly how much...10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
Yes. I have been lucky. Or privileged. Both probably.
I have had so many advantages in my life. I could afford to fail & struggle for a while when I started in comedy because I am a posh boy. This is not the case for a great many people. This is why I think Josie Long’s (she helped set it up) charity Arts Emergency is so brilliant. I had so much handed to me on a plate. Many others have not been so lucky. When it comes to making art - everyone should have the opportunity.11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?
If there are two categories I’m in both. I am not tortured but I strive for something always a bit out of reach and try to make new things often. But I also get on with it.
12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
Jim Henson. He made the world much, much better. The Muppets are an incredible force for good. Funny, kind, witty, silly, clever and they had the best music.
13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).
No. Most of the drawers in my house are bursting with stuff I don’t use or need. It’s a mess. Some of them won’t close. Some won’t open. I remain convinced that I’ll use all of what’s in there one day…

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?
My kids take great pleasure in telling me how much funnier John Finnemore & Russell Howard are that I am.
