Netflix is set to increase its coverage of stand-up comedy with a major simultaneous global event in 2019.
The company plans to release shows from 47 comedians from 13 regions around the world on the same day. They will be half-hour shows, some of them to be filmed at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal this summer. Comedians featured will come from countries including Brazil, Mexico, India, Germany and The Netherlands as well as America and the UK.
Familiar names being filmed include Nish Kumar (pictured), Joel Dommett, Mae Martin, Ellie Taylor, South Africa's Loyiso Gola, Australia's Joel Creasey and Nazeem Hussain and New Zealand's Urzila Carlson and Cal Wilson.
Lisa Nishimura, vice president of original documentary and comedy for Netflix said: “Few things are better than discovering a new comedian you love,” said . “With this event, we’re creating a true comedy festival experience for our members where they can scour the globe from home to find some of the freshest voices in comedy.”
