Alan Partridge had a classic awkward encounter on his BBC series This Time when he met his Irish doppelganger in the fourth episode of the series.
In a section of the spoof magazine show on lookalikes Partridge encountered an Irish farmer called Martin Brennan – also played by Steve Coogan – who did not know who Alan Partridge was until the similarity had been pointed out to him a week ago.
The programme finale was derailed when Brennan decided to bring his mates on to sing some folk songs which soon turned out to be pro-IRA rebel songs.
Partridge closed the programme by saying: “Oh my God, that was like an advert for the IRA.”
