Actor Tony Britton, known to millions of TV viewers as the star of hit sitcoms Don't Wait Up and Robin's Nest has died. He was 95.
His daughter, presenter Fern Britton, broke the news on Twitter: "Our father, Tony Britton, died early this morning. Great actor, director and charmer. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." He had two other children, scriptwriter Cherry Britton and actor Jasper Britton.
Jasper Britton posted: "As he was wont to say, 'that’s show business, kid'" and linked to a clip of his father on Desert Island Discs in 1973. Listen to it here.
Tony Britton was famous for playing suave charmers. In Robin's Nest, which ran on ITV from 1977 to 1981, he played the long-suffering father of the girlfriend of Robin Tripp, played by Tessa Wyatt. In Don't Wait Up he played the father of Nigel Havers. He was also in the sitcom And Mother Makes Five.
He appeared in countless films in a lengthy career, includng Sunday Bloody Sunday, There's A Girl In My Soup and Run for Your Wife.
Don't Wait Up writer George Layton tweeted: "Very sad day. I created Toby Latimer for Tony Britton. With his urbane charm & brilliant comedy timing & skill to deliver the serious side of the subject - this was a comedy about the tragedy of divorce remember - there was no other actor considered. Tony & Nigel led a great cast."
