The death of Sir Ian Holm at the age of 88 has prompted fulsome tributes for his straight acting roles in films such as Alien, Chariots of Fire and Lord of the Rings, in which he played Bilbo Baggins.
He also famously played King Lear onstage.
But like numerous actors with lengthy careers he also appeared in a number of notable roles in classic comedies. Holm appeared in Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits in 1981 as Napoleon and worked with Gilliam again on Brazil in 1985 where his cry "Has anybody seen Sam Lowry?" became a cult catchphrase.
Film director Edgar Wright tweeted: "RIP Ian Holm, a genius actor who brought considerable presence to parts funny, heartbreaking & terrifying. Thanks for Bilbo, Napoleon (twice), Sweet Hereafter, Big Night, Brazil and, of course the iconic Ash. "I can't lie to you about your chances, but... you have my sympathies."
