After a successful first flight in August 2013 and a Winter Weekender that kept the comedy embers burning over the cold, bleak months, the Phoenix Fringe is rising again. Among those appearing at this year's festival, which runs from August 2 - 9, are Frankie Boyle, Al Murray, Aisling Bea and Nick Helm.
The Phoenix Fringe hatched from a Tiffany Stevenson hangover. As the ‘fizzy pink’ haze cleared, the night’s reflections on the dwindling outlets for new, inventive and alternative comedy retained their significance.
And so, with help from her fellow comics and the team who bring you renowned new material night ‘Old Rope’ every Monday in the intimate basement of The Phoenix Cavendish Square, a DIY festival-come-showcase was born.
Come August, The Phoenix – loved by comics and audiences alike as a haven for both big name innovators (Stephen Merchant, Ricky Gervais, Sarah Millican, Lee Mack) and exciting new talent - will once again play host to a diverse line-up of shows designed to be affordable and to champion artistry and risk taking above all else.
Without additional pressures or limitations, acts at The Phoenix Fringe can push boundaries in the fundamental spirit of fringe performance, prompting comedic venture and creating an exciting alternative for comedy fans who find themselves in London over the usually laugh-barren month of August.
Also appearing are Ed Byrne, Jarred Christmas, Joe Lycett, McNeil and Pamphilon, Danielle Ward, Gavin Osborn, Lee Nelson, Mike Wozniak, Andy Zaltzman, Tiernan Douieb, Brian Gittins, Keith Farnan, Jo Neary. Further acts to be announced.
