I was talking to Sara Pascoe yesterday about the stresses and strains of getting an Edinburgh show right in time and she said that one of the hardest aspects – apart from making it funny – was coming up with an ending. I raised the name of rising star John Robins who I saw at the very start of the 2013 Fringe. His classic, pure unadulterated one man, one mic stand-up set was a sparky, funny reflection on teenage romance and premature middle age for 45 minutes, but then it suddenly fizzled out and didn’t feel as if it had a proper pay-off. Later that month I bumped into Robins and he told me that he had come up with a better ending and more positive reviews from critics who saw him later seemed to confirm this. Comedy is all about timing and this year Robins is doing plenty of previews so that he should have his ending ready from the very start. He is at the Yard Theatre tonight, with Sara Pascoe, with his show This Tornado Loves You. It’s about love and happiness and I’m pretty confident it will be very funny to the very last drop. There's a definite buzz about Robins this year – catch him now and see what the fuss is all about.
John Robins is at the Pleasance Courtyard from July 30 - August 24. Tickets here.
