Audible Theatre is set to release My Mum’s a Twat by debut writer Anoushka Warden and starring BAFTA Breakthrough Brit Susan Wokoma (Crazyhead, Year of The Rabbit, Chewing Gum) on 4th August.
My Mum’s a Twat, one girl’s funny and frank account of losing her mum to a cult, first debuted at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2018, before a stint at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
With Susan Wokoma taking on the role for the first time, the audio production is directed by Debbie Hannan, incoming Co-Artistic Director at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh whose direction credits include productions at the Young Vic, Royal Court Theatre and Soho Theatre.
Named a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30 in Entertainment in 2017, Susan Wokoma is best known for her starring role in the E4/Netflix production, Crazyhead as well as appearances in feature film Half of a Yellow Sun, E4 hit comedy Chewing Gum, and Channel 4/IFC’s Year of The Rabbit.
Anoushka Warden’s second play My Dad’s a C**t is currently short listed for the Platform Presents Playwrighting Prize and she is currently under commission to Look Out Point Productions adapting My Mum’s a Twat for TV.
My Mum’s a Twat is a witty and honest teen-spirited survival guide. The one-woman monologue recounts the deterioration of a young girl’s relationship with her mum, spanning her mother’s quest for spiritual enlightenment that lead her to join a cult, move to Canada, and take up with a man known (at least to us) as “Moron”.
The audio production will include music composed by British rapper, music producer and DJ, The Last Skeptik.
Abigail Gonda, Commissioning Producer at Audible, said: “We’re so thrilled to present Anoushka Warden’s hilariously biting theatrical debut. Susan Wokoma’s performance is a treat for the ears – it’s joyful, irreverent and beautifully paired with an original hip-hop score from The Last Skeptik. Audible’s mission to make theatre as accessible as possible is of vital importance – now more so than ever. My Mum’s A Twat is a celebration of teenage rebellion and resilience – I hope listeners enjoy this audio-exclusive version as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.”
Writer Anoushka Warden said: "Part of the brilliance of live theatre is that once the run is over, the production can only remain in your head. But as a writer it can feel a bit sad, as you may never see or hear your piece performed again. Thanks to this Audible version when I'm 87 and living in a pod somewhere in the earth's atmosphere (coz it's the future right?!) I like that I’ll be able to listen to the amazing voice of Susan Wokoma speaking words that I wrote when I was much younger. That's pretty cool!"
Actor Susan Wokoma said: “When Anoushka asked me to record My Mum’s A Twat I leapt at the opportunity. Any story that is witty, smart, breaks your heart and explores the empowering force of rap has me ALL IN. I’m a huge fan of the audio medium and its power and reach and am delighted that I get to join this team. I hope listeners love this story as much as I do.”
My Mum’s a Twat is priced at 1 credit for Audible members and £4.99 for non-members. It is available for pre-order here.
