News Year's Eve Comedy With The Last Leg, Graham Norton & Paddy McGuinness

News Year's Eve Comedy

Comedy has kept most of us reasonably sane through most of 2020 so let's hope it can get us throught the final night. There is plenty to choose from, whether it's The Last Leg, Graham Norton, more TV stuff or even live comedy shows being streamed online.

Graham Norton probably has the starriest line up. So starry, in fact, that BTJ has given him a whole story to himself. You can read more about Norton's New Year's Eve line-up here.

Channel 4's starriest show is probably The Last Leg New Year's Eve Special, at 9pm. Adam Hills (who spent the run-up to Christmas in quarantine in an Australian hotel room), Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker (who is also on The Wall Versus Celebrities at 6:40pm on BBC One) are joined by Tom Allen (don't see much of him do we?), occasional stand-in host Lorraine Kelly, offbeat genius James Acaster, force of nature Judi Love, Kurupt FM's Asim Chaudhry, with music from Taskmaster maestro Alex Horne & The Horne Section.

There is something for all tastes tonight. Even Paddy McGuinness fans, although I know that might be stretching the definition of comedy to snapping point for some people. But there’s no denying that McGuinness has a following, hence the BBC inviting the Top Gear host to drive their Big New Year's In night from 9pm on BBC One. His guests have been kept under wraps but a few names have popped up on social media today, including, fresh from his I’m A Celebrity Happy Place, Jordan North and Maya Jama (we don’t see much of her these days do we?).

There is also plenty of comedy content in The Great British Sewing Bee: Celebrity New Year Special at 8pm on BBC One. Joe Lycett is back as your waspish MC and the guests include Drag Race star The Vivienne, Birds of a Feather’s Lesley Joseph, presenter Sabrina Grant and Smack The Pony/Miranda star and all round legend Sally Phillips. Meanwhile at 8pm Richard Ayoade hosts the Celebrity Crystal Maze on C4 that features Natalie Cassidy, Nina Wadia, John Thomson and Georgia “Toff” Toffolo.

And finally Jools’ Annual Hootenanny at 11:15pm on BBC Two may well let some comics slip through the Zoom door, but you'll have to watch the show to find out who.

And if it's online comedy you are after you won't find a better line-up than comedy club Just The Tonic's online show with Romesh Ranganathan, Al Murray, Spencer Jones, Suzi Ruffell and many more. Details here. Alternatively there's the #UpYours2020 NYE Comedy Special with a bill including Seann Walsh, Jonathan Pie, Jojo Sutherland, Paul Sinha, Simon Brodkin and Tanyalee Davis. Details here.
