I was just planning my evening viewing and something struck me about the schedules. There are a heck of a lot of quizzes around at the moment. And a lot of them involve celebrities. I expect you've noticed this too.
Things start off reasonably cerebral tonight. Mastermind probably doesn't like to be described as a quiz, but when it boils down to it that's what it is. If you tune in to BBC One at 6pm on Saturday evening you can watch John Humphreys probe singer Kimberly Wyatt, TV presenter/stylist Darren Kennedy, DJ Normski and actor Aoife Hinds as they answer questions on Bob Fosse, The Geisha, electronic music and Amy Winehouse.
Straight after, at 6.30pm on BBC One, it's Celebrity Catchpoint presented by Paddy McGuinness, where Radio 1 DJs Matt Edmondson and Mollie King take on Dr Ranj Singh & Olympian Greg Rutherford. Excuse me if I pass (I wish I'd used that line about Mastermind now).
At the same time if you are snappy with the remote you can catch the last half of Celebrity Catchphrase on ITV1 – and to be honest half of it is all I can take, even if this week's show does feature boyishly bland host Stephen Mulhern and contestants Emily Atack, Brenda Edwards and Martin Kemp all attempting to say what they see to win a £50,000 jackpot for their chosen charity.
Then it's straight back to BBC One for a Pointless Celebrities Impressionists Special at 7pm. Enjoy Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman as they introduce Debra Stephenson, Luke Kempner, Jan Ravens, Ronni Ancona, Rory Bremner, Jess Robinson, Steve Nallon and Josh Berry. Though if you close your eyes you might hear David Attenborough, Boris Johnson, Donald Trump and Margaret Thatcher.
Then you are allowed a break until 8.30pm when Michael McIntyre fronts The Wheel on BBC One. Bit of a twist here, the celebrities are there to help the members of the public, so maybe this doesn't count. The guests are Masterchef host Gregg Wallace, The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades, EastEnders' Natalie Cassidy and Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson, Love Island favourite Alex George, DJ Trevor Nelson and kitchen disco star Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
And finally, on ITV1 at 10pm there's the new quiz Paul Sinha's TV Showcase (pictured), with The Sinnerman from The Chase hosting a programme which challenges stars on their knowledge of television. Regular team captains are Rob Beckett and Fay Ripley and this week's guests are Chizzy Akudolu, Shirley Ballas, Roman Kemp and Iain Stirling.
All in all there's no shortage of celebrity quiz fun tonight. It's clearly a format that works. The only thing that puzzles me is how come Romesh Ranganathan is not on any of these shows. Romesh's agent really needs to up their game. Or questions will be asked.
