Here's a bit of a trade secret that I'm sure you all know already. The Graham Norton Show which airs on BBC One on Fridays is actually filmed on Thursday nights. As a result of this the press is given juicy titbits of what was discussed in advance of the broadcast so that they can plug the content of the show.
But the quotes are sent out before the edit so some don't actually get broadcast. A while ago US chat show host Jimmy Fallon was a guest and the talk turned to his appearances onstage in London as a young stand-up comedian. He told Norton: "It was 1995 and I was there for a week on holiday. I went to the Comedy Store and asked to do a routine. I turned up at midnight and I was so excited, but the crowd was a bit rough and when I was introduced as being from America they just booed and booed before I had even said my name. I just thought, ‘Oh my gosh.’" It turned out OK in the end. "I was so nervous and was shaking, but it was one of the best gigs of my life and I almost got a standing ovation!"
Unfortunately this story did not make the Friday night broadcast.
And then last week comedy couple Marcus Brigstocke and Rachel Parris were guests. The press was told in advance that they talked about what was supposed to be a romantic trip in their camper van. Unfortunately this didn't make the cut either, so here it is.
“We got a motorhome – basically it’s a fridge on wheels – and decided to have a night away, "said Brigstocke. "We found a nice secluded spot in the woods but, after a walk and spot of backgammon, we realised we were surrounded by lots of cars in what turned out to be a popular dogging spot!”
Rachel Parris continued, “They were parked either side of us – it was terrifying. And we looked like we were the ringleaders!”
