Tributes Paid To Notting Hill Director Roger Michell

Notting Hill director Roger Michell has died aged 65. No cause of death has been given and a report in the Guardian says that he died suddenly.

Michaell had a hugely successfull career in theatre, TV and cinema. He directed further films including Venus and My Cousin Rachel and on TV directed acclaimed dramas including The Buddha Of Suburbia (pictured) and Persuasion.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott tweeted: "RIP Theatre and Film director #RogerMichell - an immense talent best known for his nuanced, deftly observed romcom Notting Hill which eschewed much of the expected Working Title schmaltz with its unlikely Hollywood love story. Venus was terrific too. Only 65."

Sanjeev Bhaskar tweeted: "Shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Roger Michell. Terrific director & always such great company. He was as generous with his time and attention towards me as the main stars on Notting Hill. A kindness I’ve never forgotten. Thoughts with his son Harry & Roger’s family."

Writer/director Edward Kemp tweeted: "Quite one of the loveliest men it has ever been my privilege to work with. #RogerMichell Unfailingly generous, kind, supportive. Actors, writers, technicians all loved him & we did better work because of him. All his work had enormous heart, like the man. #RIP"

Writer Paul Klein tweeted: "#RogerMichell might get plaudits for Notting Hill and My Cousin Rachel but his best work remains The Lost Honour of Christopher Jeffries. A true story of how the press latch onto people who are different and villainise them - often without consequence."

He was married to Kate Buffery and Anna Maxwell Martin. He and Maxwell Martin separated last year.

His children include Harry Michell, a filmmaker and member of sketch group Minor Delays.
