Stuart Laws (gilet-wearing comedian and beer mat flipping enthusiast) will attempt to break the current world record for most beer mats flipped and caught in 60 seconds. The record stands at 74... until next Friday.
The attempt was announced with a video featuring Taskmaster star Ivo Graham — see below.
Taking a break from his new stand up show at Monkey Barrel, Stuart Laws is going to attempt to flip his way into the record books. Taking his love of beer mat flipping to the logical extreme: flipping as many in 60 seconds as he can.
The record of 74 beer mats flipped and caught was set in 2013 by Ashrita Furman. The year Stuart was debuting at the Edinburgh Fringe. Ashrita Furman currently holds 530 world records, including the record for most world records. It’s Stuart’s intention to take one of those away from him. With the greatest of politeness.
Stuart developed his love for beer mat flipping as a youngster and now it forms an integral part of Stuart’s solo show Stuart Laws? Is That Guy Still Going? (16:45 1st-27th August) and the basis of his exciting one-off show Comedians Beer Mat Flipping Super Bowl (23:30 15th August).
The attempt will take place on 4th August, at 12:30pm in the Monkey Barrel bar. Hosted by Pierre Novellie and with Mark Silcox officiating, plus a selection of other comedians making their own attempt at the record. The filmed flipping will be submitted to be officially recorded. The task is simple: 75 single beer mats laid out and Stuart has to flip them as quickly as he can. There will be 3 attempts.
Stuart explains why he wanted to go for the record: “For 30 years I've loved flipping beer mats as an enthusiastic amateur, but with the success of the Comedians Beer Mat Flipping Championship and the fact that my athleticism is on the decline: I decided it was now or never if I was to go pro as a flipper.”
