Every comedian gets the TV series they deserve. Grumpy stand-ups get sitcoms in which they play grumpy versions of themselves. Snappy stand-ups get shiny floor comedies.
And so master improvisor Ross Noble, who goes onstage not really knowing what is going to happen, gets Freewheeling, literally a comedy roadshow – he hits the tarmac on his motorbike in search of fun, with fans on Twitter pointing him in various unexpected directions.
In the first episode of the second series he pinballs between Leicester and his native stomping ground the north-east. As he points out in his intro, there are lots of documentaries that show cheese-rolling in Gloucester, so he goes off on a typical tangent and comes up with processed cheese chucking in Leicester.
You’ve probably seen him being pelted by slabs of orange fromage in the trailers by now, along with being punched much harder than expected by an old lady. He also has a lot of fun here ganging up on a woman arriving at Newcastle Airport and appears to make the local papers by doing it, which, if correct, suggests that nothing much happens in Newcastle.
The main action in the opening episode, however, focuses on Brian from Gateshead, who tweets Ross to say that he is due in court in Sunderland. “It’s nothing serious like murder or anything,” Brian reassures Noble. In fact it turns out to be a relatively petty – compared to murder – car insurance-related issue.
Ross rounds up his online forces and sets up his Justice For Brian campaign, occasionally wondering whether Brian is actually innocent. It is a truly hilarious protest which culminates in a frankly bemused Billy Ocean chipping in. We won’t say any more. If you want to find out how Noble’s Twitter army gets on you’ll have to tune in.
Ross Noble: Freewheeling, Dave, 10pm, Tuesdays from March 24.
