It’s one of those things where you go “this is so brilliant why didn’t they do it earlier?”. Matt Berry has been pretty famous in a culty way for his booming matinee idol voice ever since he played actor Todd Rivers in Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place. So it was surely only natural that the BBC would pick him to do a six-part online series of spoof mini-documentaries.
Following previous BBC iPlayer hits Lone Wolf and Wild Love, Berry now lends his delicious vowelage to a different subject each time. First up the Boat Race gets the Berry treatment – all incorrect syllables, bad pronunciation, odd emphasis, burping and lots of swearing. Co-writer Bob Mortimer presumably added to the smut count (and was also responsible for giving one of the rowers the name Wavey Dave – very Big Night Out).
The use of archive footage works well too as Berry runs through his dubious version of the history of this illustrious college competition, which turns out to involves posh student toffs whacking ducks on the head and has the motto “The oar is more powerful than the beak". Oh, and the winner gets a trophy made of cotton and penis.
Berry is on a roll at the moment, with Toast of London and his scene-stealing appearances on House of Fools. He also has a real-life band The Maypoles to think about. I guess at some point he won’t have time for these titbits of filthy, frivolous online fun. Make the most of them while he is able to fit them in to his increasingly busy schedule. Or as he might put it, his increasingly fucking busy schedule.
