Comedy fans will know actor Graham Fellows as MOR star John Shuttleworth these days, but before he became the master of the Yamaha organ Fellows had a brief fling with pop stardom as lovelorn anorak-wearer Jilted John who had a hit with his self-titled single in the late 1970s. A story has recently re-emerged of how back in the day Jilted John's fame collided with the lead singer of the Police.
When Sting was filming his role as 'Ace Face' in the movie Quadrophenia it was noticed one day on the call sheet that his name weas Gordon Sumner. As a result some people took to singing the chorus of Jilted John's biggest hit on set, which was "Gordon is a moron".
According to the film's star, Phil Daniels, Sting didn't really like this. “I don’t think he was too happy. That’s all I remember.”
Although fellow star Toyah Wilcox suggests that he wasn't that bothered and took the teasing “really well”.
