It was a mixed night for comedians and the comedy industry involved in the General Election last night. Most notably Tommy Sheppard, who runs the Stand comedy club chains and various venues at the Edinburgh Fringe, was elected as SNP MP for Edinburgh East, snatching the seat from Labour with 23,188 votes, 49% of the poll.
Elsewhere Al Murray’s FUKP Party notched up plenty of publicity in the run-up but failed to make much of a dent in the results in South Thanet, where UKIP leader Nigel Farage had been tipped to become MP. Murray polled 318 votes, while Tory winner Craig Mackinlay won 18,838 votes and Farage picked up 16,026.
Murray stayed in character as the Pub Landlord as the result was called, expressing open-mouthed shock when it was announced that Farage has lost (although he probably already knew the result). It looks like Al Murray will now be going back to his day job. He has just announced that he will be appearing at the Royal Albert Hall on October 11, 2016. Tickets here.
Elsewhere Heydon Prowse, co-presenter of The Revolution Will Be Televised, stood in the seat of Welwyn Hatfield. He had changed his name to Michael Green by deed poll to stand an an independent against Grant Shapps. ‘Michael Green’ was a name that Shapps had previously used. Prowse/Green got 216 votes and issued the following statement on Twitter: “I retire and revert to Heydon Prowse and my old job of annoying politicians.”
A rare moment to savour for Labour was Rupa Huq’s victory in Ealing Central and Acton. Huq is the sister-in-law of Charlie Brooker.
