Prime Minister Keir Starmer took a leaf out of French President Emmanuel Macron by donning aviator sunglasses onstage last night.
The Prime Minister was being interviewed at the Duchess Theatre in London by comedian Matt Forde for Forde's Political Party podcast. After Forde asked him if he had ever worn sunglasses he presented the PM with a pair of shades – a reference to Macron turning up at the recent Davos conference in Switzerland looking like Fonzie from Happy Days (Macron wasn't trying to look cool, he reportedly had an eye issue).
Starmer sportingly put on the glasses and in with the best French accent he could muster said "Bonjour".
He later tagged President Macron in a social media post which was captioned “Talk to me, Goose”, a line from the film Top Gun.
Forde joked at the start of the wide-ranging interview that he had worried that the PM might cancel the booking given what a rollercoaster week he had just had, alluding to Trump, Greenland and Andy Burnham. He finished the interview by handing the Prime minister an evelope - not an invitation from King Charles but two free tickets to Forde's uncoming stand-up tour.
