You know how you've played that party game-slash-thought experiment, would you rather? Comedian Richard Herring has even put a particular poser to interviewees on his podcast - would you rather have a hand made of ham or an armpit that dispenses sun cream? Prime has now made a TV show out of the idea. Sadly – for Richard – they've hired Romesh Ranganathan to host it and there are no ham hands or suncream armpits, but it's still pretty enjoyable.
Instead of comedians, which would've sailed a bit too close to Last One Laughing territory, Would You Rather: Decide To Survive features two teams of YouTubers and Influencers including King Kenny, Bambino Becky, Stephen Tries, Elz the Witch and Chunkz. I only knew a few of them, but I presume many have big followings and will be sharing the shit out of clips in the coming weeks.
The set-up is quite canny. In the intro at the start of the first show Romesh, on effortlessly good form, casually questions the players and their answers turn out to be more significant than they realise. Would you rather have a duvet and no mattress or a mattress with no duvet turns out to be more than pointless chit chat...sweet dreams everyone.
The interviews show Romesh – and the guests – at their best. There's some good to-and-fro banter, particularly between Romesh and star of show one Chunkz, with Romesh doing his trademark put-downs and Chunkz coming up with some quickfire comebacks. Influencers are generally portrayed as dim but there are some bright sparks here – look out also for prankster Max Frosh who could be a dark horse.
Each show features a set-piece game. First up finds the players choosing whether they'd like to be slippy or sticky and then having to take part in an orgy, sorry, and then having to take part in an assault course. It's entertaining to watch them falling about and if you are old enough it might even remind you of It's A Knockout.
In fact for a show based around a dinner party ice-breaker, WYR has echoes of lots of TV shows. There's also a Taskmaster vibe as the players are confronted by the unexpected and have to think laterally. The subtitle Decide To Survive is a tad dramatic though – slithering down a ramp is hardly a life-or-death SAS Who Dares Wins challenge. It's a little bit Bushtucker Trial too, but no eating kangaroo bum, more choosing between a cold bath and a dirty hot bath. I expect cynics would rather stick pins in their eyes than watch this but give it a shot, you might like it.
Would You Rather? is streaming on Prime Video now.
