Performer To Give Greyfriars Bobby The Funeral He Never Had
Greyfriars Bobby never had a funeral. After 154 years that's all about to change thanks to an idiot with a dream and absolutely no self-serving, ulterior motive.

Zoe Wohfeld, whose clown show DOG FUNERAL is making its Edinburgh debut this month at the Underbelly Cowgate, will lead a parade of performers from over 30 Edinburgh Fringe shows through the streets of Edinburgh to the spot where little Bobby was laid to rest to celebrate the life of Scotland's most famous pet.

Greyfriars Bobby belonged to Edinburgh nightwatchman John Gray, and when Gray died he was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard. Bobby spent the rest of his life - 14 years - at his owner's graveside until he died in January 1872. This incredible story of the terrier's devotion has inspired many artists from Lewis Capaldi to Terry Pratchett and has even featured in the Grand Theft Auto videogame series. Now Bobby has once more inspired artists to celebrate his life and sacrifice.

Zoe will be joined by some of the best-loved clowns at this year's Fringe for a colourful, musical, and theatrical tribute to wee Bobby.

Zoe said: "I don't know what people mean by 'performative grief'. I just want to walk through a busy city in full mourning attire, weeping loudly with a procession of brightly-dressed clowns playing music to give the cute puppy a proper send off.

"If you had a dog and you never had a chance to celebrate their life, if you never had a dog but always wished you did or if you just feel very sad about the inevitability of death, come and join us."

The commemorative funeral of Greyfriars Bobby will take place on Friday 14th August at 2pm starting outside Underbelly Cowgate and following the attached route round to the Greyfriars Bobby statue at the junction of George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row (map below). Leading it will be Gaulier-trained clown Zoe Wohlfeld, known for ensemble clown show 'A Night of Drama' and debuting this year with 'DOG FUNERAL' at the Underbelly, the service will be officiated by a special guest. Lead pallbearer will be John Simpson. Meanwhile, Skank Sinatra will sing ‘My Way’ at the ceremony.

Anyone can join, human or animal. Please indicate your attendance to: Julian Hall on 07810 486658 / [email protected]

Dress code: black mourning costume and also clown attire or fancy dress.
