As I wrote in my piece on how to get reviewed at the Fringe, luck can play its part as much as skill. About ten years ago I stumbled into a show by the then unknown Michael McIntyre because I was nearby and had a spare hour. And in 2013 I was also at a loose end and wandered into a free package show where Rob Auton was doing a taster of his full show. One of his lines was "I heard a rumour that Cadbury is bringing out an oriental chocolate bar. Could be a Chinese Wispa." I laughed and nominated it for Dave’s Funniest Joke of the Fringe and it duly won. As Rob explained, however, the joke was hardly representative of his work. Auton is no one-liner merchant, he has a more wistful, poetic tone, homing in on one aspect of life and finding something fresh there. He has done shows about sky, faces and the colour yellow and this year his show is about water. “It is suitable for anybody who has seen, heard, touched or tasted water,” he says. But maybe not Michael McIntyre fans
Rob Auton plays The Cutty Sark tonight with Elvis McGonagall, tickets here, and is at the Banshee Labyrinth form Aug 8 - 30, info here.
