I don’t know how nervous performers get but I get pretty nervous sitting in the audience. Particularly when it is a relatively unknown comedian doing a free gig in a large venue that they hadn’t initially planned to play. This was what happened to Sofie Hagen last year when there was a last minute venue switch. I was worried that the audience might not warm to her as she was an unknown quantity, but from the moment she came on and opened with a particularly memorable line about pissing on a man she instantly had everyone onside. Her mix of vulnerability, confidence and squirm-inducing honesty struck a chord with everyone and Hagen bagged the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer. And now there is just the small matter of the follow-up, Shimmer Shatter. No pressure then. Seriously. No pressure. Hagen clearly has what it takes. Whatever that is.
Sofie Hagen is doing a work-in-progress at the Anglers in Teddington tonight with Viv Groskop, tickets here, and at the Liquid Room Annexe from August 6 - 28, tickets here.
