The backpacking comedy-drama makes it to Vietnam this week, where the young foursome is torn between party-fuelled hedonism and adventure and working in an orphanage. And then there is Greg (Tim Key), who wants to play tourist and check out the country's recent military history: “experience the war with none of the downsides”.

So while May (Alice Lee) and Ashley (Brittney Wilson) get jobs with the local children's charity, Sean (Ade Oyefeso) and Dylan (Anders Hayward) decide to blag their way into a local swish hotel by pretending to be travel writers. It's pretty obvious that all that sea bass and champagne is going to end up costing them in some way – if it was this easy we would all be doing it – but it is fun to watch them dig an increasingly big hole for themselves.

Once again though it is Tim Key's Greg who has the most distinctive plotline. It looks as if he is about to embark on a local romance but having put his foot in it David Brent-style things do not pan out as expected. 

A notable performance from comedian Scott Adsit (who worked on cult US show Adult Swim) as humourless orphanage boss Todd is one of the added delights in this fast-paced episode that manages to avoid the usual 'Nam "me love you long time" cliches. After a wobbly start it looks like it will be well worth sticking with Gap Year for the duration. And not just for the exotic scenery.
