Comedy Central UK has announced that it has greenlit a pilot from Burning Bright for the cult live musical show, AMusical, bringing it to the screen for the first time. The show will be fronted by stars of the stage version Kiri Pritchard-McLean and Jayde Adams, along with musical director Dave Cribb.
The 22-minute pilot, which will be filmed at Hackney Empire in front of a live studio audience in September, will air later this year on Comedy Central UK. It will feature comedians working up the courage to belt out their favourite number from a musical in front of a live audience. Confirmed comedians so far include Frank Skinner and London Hughes.
“I fell in love with AMusical as a stage show at Edinburgh last year and am so thrilled that we’re able to bring it to the screen for the first time,” commented Louise Holmes, Vice President, General Manager, Comedy Central UK. “With two of comedy’s most dazzling leading ladies, Kiri and Jayde, at the helm, plus a stellar line up of guest comedians brave enough to be taken out of their comfort zones as they sing their hearts out, AMusical promises to be a gloriously entertaining treat of a show.”
The announcement underlines Comedy Central UK’s ongoing push to diversify its British comedy offering and increase the volume of non-scripted comedy it broadcasts, all of which has helped to drive the channel to its current position of the #3 non-terrestrial entertainment channel in the UK for 1634s. In 2017, the network achieved its highest year ever for share, fuelled in part by a number of recent UK Commissions including Your Face or Mine and Roast Battle UK, which is the highest rating UK commission ever for the channel.
The pilot has been commissioned by Holmes and developed by Lucy Robinson, Comedy Central UK’s VP, Original Content, Comedy Development. Directed by Julia Knowles, it is being produced for Burning Bright by executive producers Clive Tulloh, Kate Edmunds and Séamus Murphy-Mitchell.
