Friends star David Schwimmer has seen the funny side of being mistaken for an alleged shoplifter in Blackpool.

After police posted footage of a dark-haired man carrying a crate of cans social media was inundated with people remarking that the slim figure looked just like the American star.

In fact the police even posted a statement confirming that Schwimmer was not a suspect: "Thank you to everyone for your speedy responses. We have investigated this matter thoroughly and have confirmed that David Schwimmer was in America on this date." 

And now Schwimmer himself has tweeted about the stunning coincidence, writing: "Officers, I swear it wasn't me. As you can see, I was in New York. To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation. #itwasntme"

He has also posted some footage of himself – carry some cans in a supermarket...
