Radio 4's series Last Word has broadcast an obituary of comedian Ian Cognito.

Cognito died onstage in Bicester on April 11. Reports say he suffered a heart attack. He was 60.

Friend and fellow comedian Toby Hadoke, who wrote the Guardian obituary of Cognito, said: "He would bring audiences to the boundaries of what they found acceptable and generally drag them back again." Hadoke pinpointed the fact that Cognito seemed to enjoy deliberately needling an audience and pricking liberal bubbles.

In an audio clip of Cognito played on the programme the controversial comic talked about being "attention seeking with a loud voice," perfect for his early gig at a "Wild West" gig where the audience consisted of Arsenal and Tottenham supporters. In another clip he recalled being banned from numerous comedy clubs including a Brighton club where he was banned but never knew why.

The tribute also discussed his reputation for being unsuitable for television: "He was the ultimate 'you had to be there'.." said Hadoke.
