Comedian Julian Clary is the latest performer to be honoured with a permanent portrait on the Wall of Fame at the London Palladium
The Wall of Fame was launched last year as part of the renovations to the Grade II listed facade of the Palladium. Created by award-winning artist Lee Simmons, the installation is sited at the theatre’s world famous Stage Door on Great Marlborough Street. It is a permanent legacy to the many artists that have headlined at The London Palladium and provides an intrinsic link between icons of the past and performers of the future.
Julian is the first artist to be added to the Wall of Fame since it launched in October last year and he joins an elite group that were chosen by an advisory committee of Don Black, Michael Grade and Laurie Mansfield. They are Arthur Askey, Ronnie Barker, Shirley Bassey, Jack Benny, Cilla Black, Max Bygraves, Nat King Cole, Ronnie Corbett, The Crazy Gang, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr, Ken Dodd, Gracie Fields, Bruce Forsyth, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Tom Jones, Danny Kaye, Marie Lloyd, Vera Lynn, Liberace, Max Miller, Des O’Connor, Johnnie Ray, Cliff Richard, Tommy Steele, Jimmy Tarbuck, Tommy Trinder, Frankie Vaughan and Norman Wisdom.
Andrew Lloyd Webber said “Julian more than meets the criteria having performed at The Palladium for almost thirty years and headlining the Pantomime for the past four. I’m delighted that he is receiving this honour today. For over a hundred years, The London Palladium has presented the most prestigious pantomimes in the West End, and in recent times it is the performances from artists like Julian Clary that have enabled that legacy to continue. He is one of our most popular and distinctive comedians and continues to wow audiences of all ages with his wit, good humour and without doubt his spectacular pantomime costumes.”
Julian Clary said “I am truly delighted to be joining such illustrious company on the Palladium Wall of Fame. I love performing in this magical theatre and the joy of walking on stage here never diminishes. There is no thrill like it, and I’ve tried a few.”
