Alfie Brown was one of the first comedians I wrote about when I launched this website. He had a dodgy gig at the 99 Club, which was half-stand-up comedy, half-philosophical debate, but he definitely had something. Since then he has got better and better. His style is not always comfortable, but it is refreshing to see someone not prepared to succumb to cliches and try to take comedy somewhere interesting. In his last show he talked about rejecting traditional values of society and questioned what the very essence of life was about. He had recently split from his partner which added a further frisson to his existential angst. Brown is still in his twenties but has crammed a lot of living in. His new show, Divorced From Reality (And My Wife) sounds like it expands on previous themes. There’s a little bit of Russell Brand here and if you close your eyes Brown sounds a little bit like Jack Whitehall, but don't hold either of those things against him. He is definitely a comedian going places. Thought not to Balham tonight because his preview at Rise of the Idiots has been cancelled.
Alfie Brown is at The Pleasance Courtyard from July 30 - Aug 24. Tickets here.
