Alex Edelman
There is a long tradition of American artists being quickly embraced in the UK, from Jimi Hendrix to Bill Hicks. I think at the moment Alex Edelman is in the process of joining that illustrious list. Since winning the Foster’s Best Newcomer Award last year he has been spending a lot of time over here, gigging in clubs, honing his new Edinburgh show and winning a lot of new fans with his appearance on The John Bishop Show.
Alex Edelman won the Foster’s Best Newcomer award last year. The previous person to win the Best Newcomer award was John Kearns, who followed it up by winning the main Foster’s award the following year, the first time this double had ever been done. So no pressure on Edelman then. But if there is pressure I think he can handle it.
Winners of the Foster's Award for Best Newcomer don't always make the grade, but I can't see 2014 winner Alex Edelman slipping into obscurity. I first spotted the 25-year-old American in an el cheapo video clip with Alfie Brown and thought that, like Brown, this young man had something.
The 2014 Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Award winner John Kearns will be playing an extended run of his prize-winning show Shtick in London this autumn. Kearns will be at the Soho Theatre from September 24 to October 18. Last year's Foster's Award winner Bridget Christie broke box office records when she brought her acclaimed show, A Bic For Her, to the same venue. Foster's Best Newcomer Alex Edelman is also expected to announce dates at the Soho Theatre for his show, Millennial.
