Derry Girls
It is one of those odd coincidences that this new Irish sitcom featured the music of the Cranberries – not heard in a while – on the soundtrack shortly before singer Dolores O Riordan died. People of a certain age were saying that the series captured a period of their youth in the same way O Riordan's music did.
The second episode of this 1980s-set coming-of-age Irish sitcom written by Lisa McGee proves that the brilliance of the first episode of Derry Girls was not a fluke. Which is lucky for Channel 4 as they have just announced that they have already commissioned a second series.
Channel 4 has announced that, following the ‘class’ reaction to the first episode of Derry Girls, which premiered on Thursday 4th January at 10pm, a second series has been commissioned.
New Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls got off to a great start last night.
The series following the lives of teenagers during the Troubles and written by Lisa McGee notched up viewing figures of 1.6 million, which is very impressive for its slot. The comedy also got very positive reviews from both professional critics and fans on social media.
The Telegraph praised it "as much a black comedy about the Troubles as a teenage nostalgia fest."
Derry Girls, featuring Tommy Tiernan, is a brand new comedy from acclaimed writer Lisa McGee who has mined her own experiences to create a candid, one-of-a-kind, family-centred comedy set against the spectre of The Troubles.
