Trevor Noah
These are busy times for television-friendly comedians. Even though Live at the Apollo is taking a break there seem to be more mainstream openings than ever for those that fancy a bit of exposure. ITV1 has Sunday Night at the Palladium and now BBC1 has jumped in a day earlier with The John Bishop Show.
Trevor Noah is to be the new host of The Daily Show. It has been reported that he will take over later this year from long-standing host Jon Stewart, who announced he was leaving in February.
Noah has been a success in his appearances as one of the Comedy Central topical show's roving reporters and last night online reports suggested that he was a front-runner to take over from Stewart.
South African comedian Trevor Noah, who was one of the stars of this evening's Royal Variety show on ITV1, is to undertake his biggest UK tour to date in 2015. Noah recently also became a regular correspondent on Jon Stewart's Daily Show in America.
It is both pleasing and intriguing when a distinctive comedian that you have liked for years suddenly starts to gain wider acceptance. This has definitely happened to Tony Law since he was nominated for a Foster's Award in 2012. Pleasing because he is brilliant, intriguing because there was a time when I thought that Law was way too left field for television with his surreal riffs and 1908 Arctic explorer chic. But it has all fallen into place and he seems to be perfectly at home next to Noel Fielding on Never Mind The Buzzcocks.
