Cradle To Grave

TV: Cradle To Grave, BBC2, Episode 7/8

A couple of years ago I interviewed Micky Flanagan in his house and as I was leaving I noticed Danny Baker’s autobiography on his shelf. Flanagan and Baker are about the same age and, it turned out, had similar working class upbringings in London. Flanagan told me that judging by the book, which Cradle To Grave is based on, Baker’s feelgood life story was just like his, but with the bad bits taken out.

TV: Cradle To Grave, BBC2, Episode 4

Cradle to Grave is based on Danny Baker’s autobiography, but the inspiration for part of the humour in the fourth episode involving the school soccer team seems to have come from somewhere else altogether…

The latest instalment features a shouty, win-at-all-costs northern track-suited trainer called Mr Glover (played by John Henshaw). There is a distinct whiff of Kes here. Maybe it’s a bizarre coincidence or maybe it's a homage, but the trainer in Kes was played by a Mr Glover. Mr Brian Glover.

TV: Cradle to Grave, BBC2, Episode 3

Danny Baker’s rose-tinted TV memoir continues with more ducking and diving from various members of the Baker clan. The emphasis here is on influential patriarch, Fred “Spud” Baker (Peter Kay), whose job seems to consist of emptying boats and sticking half of everything in his pocket. But a new security team threatens his livelihood: “the only thing I’m earning at the moment is me wages,” cries Spud at one point.
