Bilal Zafar
Edinburgh Comedy Awards Best Newcomer Nominee Bilal Zafar was working on a new online comedy series when the coronavirus crisis struck. Luckily he already has five episodes filmed and ready to go so has started to release them. In each episode Zafar offers advice to an actor who he thinks may be underperforming or not reaching their potential. Zafar is a stand-up but has also had acting roles in C4's Catastrophe, Last Christmas and Hollyoaks. His first masterclass is out now and features guest Josie Long.
Bilal Zafar broke through two years ago with his debut show about how an online joke about him running a muslims-only cake shop (he didn't) spiralled and went viral. This year he returns with another show which looks at the insidious power of the internet. In Lovebots Zafar discusses the influences of bots and reveals how he has fought back by creating his own bots which only want to spread love and compassion.
Following a critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe which saw him nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Awards Best Newcomer award Bilal Zafar has announced his first nationwide tour with his debut show Cakes, including a six-night run at London’s Soho Theatre from 23rd January.
Comedy about cakes takes the biscuit! As a journalist who loves a good headline it would be lovely if Bilal Zafar’s debut Edinburgh show Cakes won an award, but while it is great I'm not sure if it is great enough compared to a lot of other strong shows on the Fringe.
When you go to a lot of comedy competitions you start to see the same faces popping up in the finals. I spotted the very talented Bilal Zafar about a year ago and earlier this year he won the New Act of the Year competition, which is the most prestigious of the umpteen newbie competitions you can enter. The East London stand-up has made his name with a brilliantly honed routine about a Twitter spat over what was thought to be a Muslim-only cake shop.
