How does Mat Ewins do it? I didn't have a press ticket for this show and just as it was about to start and my pass still hadn't pinged in I was standing in the street trying to get a phone signal and the security guard asked what I was doing. I explained and he said "why don't you just walk in, tickets are free?". So I hurried in as it started, settled down at the back, sorted my notebook out, got my pencil out and as I looked up Mat Ewins' video screen was running live tweets.
Funniest show on the Fringe is a phrase dished out all too easily. Often by people who have not seen all of the 1000+ comedies at the Fringe and so aren't really in a position to judge. Well, now I'm also one of those people who hasn't seen everything, but I'm pretty sure that nothing is going to beat Mat Ewins' Danger Money. He's usually pretty inventive with his titles. I don't know why he didn't just call it Funniest Show On The Fringe and cut out the middle man.
Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Mat Ewins (Harry Hill’s Clubnite, Live from the BBC) has joined forces with double Edinburgh Comedy Award winner John Kearns to launch brand new podcast called Microscope.
In each episode the pair attempt to explain the unexplainable and solve some of the world’s biggest mysteries – from an obscure theme park that appears to be haunted to a gym that’s been infiltrated by wizards – with Ewins interviewing Kearns in the guise of a different character each week.
There are always a few shows that can get overlooked in Edinburgh so I'm eternally grateful to my colleague Dominic Maxwell, who on my last day at the Fringe pointed me in the direction of a show that is totally dotty and deranged but also deceptively well-crafted.
