As well as being a formidable stand-up comedian Hannah Gadsby is also an expert on classical art. She brings these two skills together in her latest show, The Exhibitionist, which opens at the Soho Theatre tonight. Gadsby is Australia-based, but expect to be hearing more of her in the UK in the near future. She is currently making a series for Radio 4, Hannah Gadsby Speaks From Her Art, in which she discusses her favourite paintings. This live show should be a good primer for the radio version. It’s a very visual subject though – surely it cannot be long before TV picks up on Gadsby too.
Also tonight at Soho Theatre C4’s sketch darlings Cardinal Burns start their run. I saw their show in Edinburgh last month where it was a stripped down version due, presumably, to the fact that there were other gigs either side of them so there was no time for elaborate sets or big costume changes. It was still very funny. I was hoping that the Soho residency would be a bigger production with more characters, but apparently it will be a similarly structured show, except on September 14 when it will be the much longer full tour show. Hardcore fans will love the twosome's twisted humour anyway, but those sitting on the fence should buy a ticket for Sept 14.
There’s a lovely little mini-Festival at Kings Place in Kings Cross from Thursday, kicking off with Bridget Christie doing her 2013 Foster’s Award-winning show, A Bic for Her. Friday’s events include Tim Key and Tom Basden getting up to strange antics in their occasional two-hander Freeze. On Saturday there is sketch comedy from Cariad and Paul and the Beta Males and then on Sunday there are another two shows, one from my multi-media Bowie-fixated laptop hero Adam Buxton and one from Carly Smallman.
