What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?
Sickeningly proud. Full on Number One Fan type situation, but in a quietly supportive, standing on the sidelines, gentle way. They’ve been encouraging from day one and positively reinforcing at each and every weird little show I’ve worked on along the way. What a pair of clowns.
What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
It's made me TOO EMPLOYABLE. So many strings to my bow It's become a damn HARP.
I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
UNDERRATED. He’s a good lad, that Murphy kid. He’s got some good ideas (might even have some great ones!) and he does the best damn job he can with the shoddy old tools he’s been given - like a pale, Brummie, MacGyver. He makes me laugh on a daily basis and isn’t afraid of putting in the hard work. You should hire him! As an actor, comedian, writer, voice over, consultant, whatever you need. Great value for money. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
Not enough to own a property and enough to own a property, respectively.
How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
My advice? Don’t worry about getting lucky, just focus on getting good. That’s something tangible, and something you can actively play a hand in. You get good at something by doing it a lot, by trial and error, by getting it wrong and, crucially, by being open to other people. The luckiest break I’ve ever had was meeting the brilliant friends I have today. THAT’S RIGHT. I LOVE MY FRIENDS AND I DON’T CARE WHO KNOWS.
Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?
I think it’s fair to say there’s a little of the tortured artist in every creative. I’m no golfer but I tend to get on with life pretty well, focus on the positives and sniff out a good time whenever I have the chance. However, the entertainment industry isn’t the easiest world to survive in. Loving the work doesn’t always mean the work loves you back, it can certainly feel like a somewhat unrequited sort of relationship at times.
Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
Tom Waits. God bless that man. A joker, a genius, a troubadour, a raconteur. Hopping between genres with each album he releases, popping up as oddball characters in quirky independent films, all the while delivering the goods and retaining his mysterious wild man image. He's authentically himself. That word gets bandied around a lot, “authentic”, but I really think it does apply to Waits. Total ledge.
Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).
Tidy surfaces, messy drawers. Gotta keep it locked down on the surface, my life is such a mess in every other conceivable way the only thing keeping me afloat is the fact that my physical possessions remain in good order. That said, as soon as you start to take a look inside a bag/drawer/cupboard/mind the true chaos of the situation lies ready in wait. Here be dragons.
