Edinburgh Fringe Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Sex Tips for Straight Women From a Gay Man Playwright Matt Murphy

What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

My parents are super supportive and they attend every one of my opening nights.  They are also super uncomfortable talking about sex.  Nowadays when I ask my mother where she’d like to sit for the latest Sex Tips opening, she says “How about the lobby?”

What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Hearing tons of laughter at a show you think is horrible and wondering if that’s what it takes to succeed.

I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I observe people a lot, and think about what is and isn’t proper in polite society a lot, and somehow, I’ve managed to turn that into some funny moments on stage.

How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

That, my friend, is not a proper question for polite society.

How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

The less talented you are, the more lucky you need to be to succeed, which is why I’ll never tell you how many lucky breaks I’ve had!

Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?

I don’t play golf, and I’m not into torture. Perhaps I’m not that funny after all.

Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

Rafael Nadal.  If that dude can win grand slams at the age of 36, surely I can sit at the computer and bang out a few jokes. Can’t I?

Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

No. I keep hoping someone will do it for me.
