Edinburgh Fringe Rarely Asked Questions – Lane Kwederis

What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

As a comedian: My parents don’t quite get my humor but they love that they get to see me on TV sometimes.

As a sex worker, the response from my parents was: “Whatever makes you happy and also let’s stop talking about it.”

What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

I can’t help but see missed opportunities for jokes when I watch a show  that lacks them.

I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

Yes! It took me a while to believe it (and probably to actually get very good) but now I do think I’m very good and I’m proud of myself for even being able to think that.

How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

The bulk of what I make has come from being a financial dominatrix to support my career as a comedian. That is just starting to even out and I would like that to keep happening. I don’t have an exact number of what I make as a Domme because sometimes I will even get paid in gift cards or even shoes. My taxes are a nightmare and my accountant is a saint!

How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

Luck is a huge component!  You’ve got to have the goods and be able to deliver when luck strikes but luck helps a lot. I got my first big job when I was waiting tables and the couple I was serving was casting the show Dirty Dancing. They liked me and had me come in and read and sing for the last role available in the show the next day… and I got it!

Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?

Then I guess I’m a golfer who has no idea how to golf!  I prefer taking the swing and seeing where the ball falls rather than pining over things. But to be clear: I am BAD at golf.

Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

I would say Sara Barielles.  Her talent astounds me! How is she so good at singing, writing, performing, and is also funny?! Is there anything that woman cannot do?! She also just seems so sweet and good hearted. She’s definitely up there as one of the top people I’d love to have dinner with.

Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

Every now and then I get my drawers good and tidy and then they slowly get messier until I clean them again. Basically I regularly say “this time will be different” but deep down… I’m a messy girl.
