TV Review: Amandaland, Episode Six, BBC One

TV Review: Amandaland, BBC One

In recent weeks Wednesday evening between 9pm and 10pm has been a tale of two BBC sitcoms. First up is Amanadaland, which has done so well that it has recently been confirmed that it will return for a second series. Not bad for a spin-off that some thought didn't have enough legs for one run.

And Amandaland is followed by Am I Being Unreasonable? which has, erm, not been quite so well received. When the first episode of the second series went out I asked on X whether it was just me who couldn't work out what was going on. The series has been pretty up and down since then, with Daisy May Cooper even talking on The Jonathan Ross Show about how her cosmetic "tweakments" and giving birth early affected the shooting schedule.

But let's stay positive here and celebrate the success of Amandaland. From the start I loved it so much I thought it was one of the best BBC sitcom debuts I'd ever seen since another sitcom co-starring Joanna Lumley – Absolutely Fabulous way back when a lot of you reading this weren't even born.

For those that thought Lucy Punch's character was too thinly drawn or too unsympathetic I hope you've eaten your words. She might not be quite up there with delusional comic icons such as Brent, Rigsby and Mainwaring, but I've got a lot of love for her and she has grown and grown and shown more depth and humanity as the series has gone on.

For those that haven't seen the final episode things all come to a head at the end of year football team party. When preposterous property developer Johannes (Peter Serafinowicz) pops the question, having already bought Amanda a swanky car, albeit with an incorrectly spelt personalised number plate, she is torn. Should she move to his Thameside penthouse with the noisy air conditioning or stay with her friends in So-Ha?

There's also a fine star turn from Anne (Philippa Dunne) who shows considerable backbone but also heart when she says what she thinks to Amanda, even though Amanda persistently been rude to her. All the other loose ends, well, most of them, are tied up neatly, with things beautifully set up for the second series. Great co-lab everyone. Cava all round!

Amandaland, Wednesdays, 9pm, BBC One and series all available on iPlayer.
